PRESS RELEASE – August 2017
Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center is a licensed and certified Community Mental Health Center providing behavioral health services in Winona and surrounding SE Minnesota counties since 1965. Due to sustained several year growth, the organization has entered into an agreement with Winona Health to purchase the Sarnia Square building at 420 East Sarnia. This new location will allow Hiawatha Valley to further advance its mission as “The Community Leader in delivering exceptional, responsive, and consumer focused behavioral health services” and allow for the expansion of new and existing evidence-based mental health services throughout Winona County. As a result of this growth, we have many great opportunities for people who are interested in joining our team. Winona Health will continue to operate its urgent care and rehabilitative services and departments at the Sarnia Square location for at least the next year.
Hiawatha Valley offers a broad array of mental health and substance abuse services to children, adolescents and adults from birth on up. At the present time, the organization operates from 166 Main Street and 122 West Second Street downtown, which will be consolidated into the new location. Other office locations include Caledonia, Rushford, Wabasha and Red Wing, MN and La Crosse, WI and these will remain open and serving clients as they have.
Programs that have experienced the greatest growth in capacity and necessitate our move include early childhood mental health therapy for pre-school age children and their parents and the School Linked Mental Health Program through which licensed therapist see children and adolescents in their school settings to bypass transportation and other barriers to providing therapy and other supports. The in school program is offered in the Winona Area Public, Goodview, Lewiston and St. Charles schools as well as school districts in Houston, Fillmore, Wabasha and Goodhue Counties. Adult focused services are also expanding in the areas of residential housing and therapeutic supports in community settings. The construction and completion of Hiawatha Bluffs Living Apartments for adults with mental health issues at 1433 Service Drive in Winona in July of last year was one addition. Outpatient mental health therapy and counseling, psychiatric prescriber services for medications and other programs in the area are also growing to meet community needs and reduce wait lists for clients in need. We currently have Outpatient Mental Health Therapist positions open and available at this time in Winona, Rushford, Spring Grove and Red Wing.
The transition by the organization into its new location is expected to occur in phases with some staff moving over during the fall of 2017 and other programs and departments coming in the winter and spring of 2018. Having all of its Winona area services and personnel in one centralized location will provide for the best quality services possible for its clients and consumers.
