What is SmartTown and how does it work?
SmartTown is a company that has partnered with the Winona
Chamber of Commerce and local retailers as a way to 1) Raise funds for
non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations (which includes HVMHC) and 2) Promote shopping
in the Winona community.
How does this work? Shoppers
sign up with a card that is considered a loyalty and/or gift card (NOT a
credit card in any way). So far, there are approximately 50 local
retailers currently signed up with SmartTown as a designated retailer.
You, the shopper, can go shopping at any one of those 50 retailers and use
your card when you purchase items from their store. You pay
for the items and you normally would, using cash, check or credit card.
The loyalty card is a separate transaction.
When you use the loyalty card it does the following:
- 35% of the retailer designated percent goes back to the
card to be used by you for future purchases -- this is "cash back" to you,
the shopper!
- 35% of the retailer designated percent goes to the
non-profit that the card is pointing to, which is the choice of the
consumer
- 30% is for administrative fees.
The average retailer designated percent is just under 10%.
HVMHC will be offering cards with our agency as the
designated non-profit. Watch for more information from local
newspapers or visit the Chamber site at
