1960s

1964:

  • County Commissioners of Houston, Wabasha, and Winona appoint a Board of Directors for Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center.

1965:

  • The first agency office opens at 76 East 4th Street in Winona.  It is staffed by one social worker who is also appointed the director of the agency.

  • In December of 1965 the agency hires its first psychologist.

1966:

  • In September of 1966 the agency hires its first psychiatrist.


1970s

1970:

  • In the Fall of 1970, three part-time offices are opened in Wabasha County.  They are located in Wabasha, Lake City, and Plainview.

1971:

  • In February, the agency is asked to expand its mission and services to include mental retardation (Developmental Disabilities).

  • In December, HVMHC further expands its mission and services to include Chemical Health.

1972:

  • Three part-time offices are opened in Houston County.  They are located in Caledonia, La Crescent, and Spring Grove.

1978:

  • HVMHC seeks an outreach director to assist Main House, a youth group home, in designing and implementing programs as well as individual and group counseling.

  • HVMHC establishes the Community Support Program (CSP).  The agency begins offering Day Treatment services through CSP.


1980s

1982:

  • HVMHC establishes its first residential program, Broadway Center.  It was located at 73 West Broadway in Winona.  Day Treatment services were provided at the group home. 

 

 

 

 

 

1985:

  • Emergency Services began, including a 24-hour crisis line.

  • Community Supportive Care Workers (CSCW) program started with a United Way Grant.

1989:

  • HVMHC began offering Adult Case Management services.


    1990s

1990:

  • Two separate Day Treatment programs joined together at 111 Riverfront.

1992:

  • The Medication Management Program for adults with a mental illness began.

  • HVMHC began offering Children's Case Management and Family Community Support Services.

1993:

  • HVMHC began offering Middle School Level Day Treatment programming.

1995:

  • The Winona office moved to its present location at 166 Main Street. 

  • The agency expanded its residential program by adding its first corporate adult foster care, Center House.  

 

  • Rainbow Day Treatment (Elementary level) and Wabasha County Day Treatment began.

1998:

  • Broadway Center Residential services move to 252 W. Wabasha St. and Community Based Services move to 73 W Broadway.

  • .

1999:

  • Residential Services add an additional adult foster care as well as a lodge, West Side Adult Foster Care & West Side Lodge. 


2000s

2000:

  • HVMHC purchased the PSN building at 122 West Second Street in September.  The Chemical Health program moved to this location.

2001:

  • Winona County Department of Human Services Mental Health division teamed with HVMHC to strengthen mental health services in Winona County.  Houston County followed suit shortly after the Winona collaboration.

2002:

  • ARMHS Services began being offered at HVMHC.

2003:

  • HVMHC began offering CASES services.

  • Children's services expanded with the addition of Senior High Day Treatment in Winona County.

2004:

  • CADI case management services began to be offered.

2005:

  • Residential services are reorganized.  Broadway Center became a board and lodge in January.  In August, Center House closed its doors and a new board and lodge opened next door to Broadway Center at 258 West Wabasha.

  • In August the children's case managers moved to the basement of the PSN building.
