PARENTS AND YOUTH: WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT
You can expect a safe, neutral environment. Plan to work on developing goals to better manage the mental health symptoms you are experiencing. The mental health professionals will communicate with your parent or caregiver to help the process. Youth counseling and/or treatment is not meant to be a consequence, but a way to help improve coping skills, problem solving, and increase functioning.
Plan to meet with the therapist to provide background information including a developmental history to help with gaining a better understanding of the situation and mental health symptoms present in the youth. Intake paperwork will need to be completed prior to or at the first appointment, this helps the providers gain a better understanding of the presenting symptoms. You are encouraged to inform the counselor of any other service providers working with your youth with hopes of collaborating to provide the most comprehensive youth counseling service possible. You will be given an opportunity and are encouraged to ask questions, your feedback throughout the treatment process at Hiawatha Valley is extremely important. Counseling and/or treatment is not meant to be a consequence, but a way to help improve coping skills, problem solving, and managing mental health symptoms.
