Winona, MN — This year, Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center (HVMHC) proudly marks a significant milestone: 60 years of providing essential mental health and substance use services to southeastern Minnesota. Since its founding in 1965, HVMHC has been at the forefront of mental health care, evolving alongside the needs of the community and making a lasting impact on thousands of lives every year.

Reflecting on this journey, Erik Sievers, Executive Director of HVMHC, stated:

“Our history is a testament to the resilience of our community and the dedication of our staff. Over the past six decades, we’ve not only witnessed but actively participated in the transformation of mental health care—from addressing stigma in the 1960s to embracing innovative technologies today. This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come and to reaffirm our commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based care for future generations.”

HVMHC’s origins date back to a time when mental health care was still a largely misunderstood and stigmatized field. The organization was founded to address these challenges, offering basic therapy and case management services to those in need. Over the years, HVMHC has adapted to major societal and healthcare changes, such as the deinstitutionalization movement of the 1960s and 1970s, which emphasized community-based care. This shift spurred the agency’s growth and diversification, including the addition of outpatient treatment, housing programs, and integrated services.

The 1980s and 1990s brought a growing recognition of mental health as integral to overall well-being. In response, HVMHC broadened its scope to include substance use counseling, holistic care approaches, and collaborations with schools and other community organizations. More recently, the agency has embraced telehealth technology to increase access to care for rural and underserved populations, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Today, HVMHC provides a comprehensive range of services, including mobile crisis, therapy, medication management, teaching community-based health skills and housing with support for adults. The organization also continues to reduce stigma and promote awareness through partnerships with schools, businesses, and community groups.

HVMHC began in 1965 with its first clinic in Winona.  Today HVMHC is proud to serve Fillmore, Goodhue, Houston, Wabasha, and Winona counties with clinic locations in Caledonia, Red Wing, Wabasha, and Winona.

“Our mission is more relevant than ever,” Sievers added. “We’re here to meet the evolving needs of our community, whether it’s through expanding services, breaking down barriers to care, or supporting individuals and families in every way we can.”

As HVMHC celebrates 60 years of service, the organization invites the community to join in recognizing this milestone and supporting its continued efforts to create a healthier, more inclusive future for all. Be on the lookout for a community event coming to you in 2025 to celebrate the HVMHC’s 60th anniversary.
