Winona, MN — May 2025 — May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a national movement to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals and communities to make mental well-being a daily priority.

This year, mental health organizations across the country, including local providers like Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, are highlighting the importance of taking proactive steps to care for our mental health just like we do our physical health.

“Mental well-being is about more than a diagnosis,” said Erik Sievers, Executive Director of HVMHC. “It’s about how we cope with stress, connect with others, and take care of ourselves emotionally and psychologically.”

What is Mental Well-Being?

Mental well-being includes our emotional resilience, ability to handle life’s challenges, maintain relationships, and feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It doesn’t mean being happy all the time, it means having the tools and support to navigate both the highs and lows of life.

Key practices that support mental well-being include:

  • Getting regular sleep, exercise, and nutrition
  • Staying connected with friends, family, or support groups
  • Practicing mindfulness or gratitude
  • Setting healthy boundaries
  • Seeking help when things feel overwhelming

Breaking the Stigma

While the conversation around mental health has improved dramatically over the past decade, stigma and misinformation still prevent many people from reaching out for help. Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to change that, by starting conversations, sharing resources, and creating a culture where mental health is treated with the same care as physical health.

“Whether you’re managing anxiety, dealing with grief, or just feeling stuck, help is available and reaching out is a sign of strength,” said Sievers.

Local Support is Available

For community members in southeastern Minnesota, Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center continues to offer a wide range of mental health services, from therapy and support groups to crisis response and school-based care.

This May, the organization is also marking a special milestone: 60 years of serving the community. Since 1965, HVMHC has grown alongside the communities it serves, adapting to meet changing needs and working to make care more accessible, compassionate, and comprehensive. As Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center steps into the next chapter, its commitment remains unchanged: to continue breaking down barriers, championing compassionate care, and walking alongside individuals on their journey to wellness.
