Winona, MN – Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center (HVMHC) and the Winona Arts Center (WAC) are thrilled to announce the grand opening reception of Dwelling, a remarkable art exhibit showcasing the work of 12 local artists. The opening will take place on Sunday, December 1, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Winona Arts Center, located at 228 East 5th Street, Winona, MN. Guests are invited to enjoy light refreshments as they immerse themselves in this unique exploration of the concept of “dwelling.” The exhibit will run through January 12, 2025.

The Dwelling project is the result of a six-week collaborative workshop series hosted by WAC in partnership with HVMHC. Made possible through a grant from the Southeast Minnesota Arts Council (SEMAC), this initiative brought participants together to explore the meaning of “dwelling” through drawing, carving, and printing on woodblocks. Over two full-day printing sessions, these artistic visions were transformed into high-quality archival prints, now featured in the exhibit.

“This project connects people,” said Andy Kranz, Mental Health Practitioner at HVMHC. “The process of creating a woodblock print takes time, and participants bonded over this shared experience. They overcame doubt, solved problems, and built resilience, all while forming new friendships. This collaboration represents inclusion, equality, and the power of art to create a sense of community.”

For many participants, the project offered much more than artistic expression. “I made good connections with others,” said Opal Peters, a local artist and participant. “It was a very healing experience. It has given me confidence and comfort in being me.”

The exhibit is not only a testament to the participants’ creativity but also highlights the impact of art on mental health and community connection. “This project gave me access to materials and other artists that I wouldn’t normally have access to,” said Christine Liebig, another local artist and participant. “Sharing this experience gave me a sense of belonging and a wonderful opportunity for collaboration.”

The Dwelling exhibit also underscores the importance of partnerships between organizations like HVMHC and WAC. “This project raises awareness about mental health and housing while showcasing the strength of our community assets,” added Kranz.

Each print on display is a visual response to the theme of “dwelling,” representing the unique perspectives and experiences of its creator. Visitors will gain insight into how art can serve as a tool for processing emotions, fostering resilience, and building connections.
